Is it safe to edit a PDF online?
It’s safest when the PDF never leaves your device. Many online editors upload it and delete it after an hour or two; at pdfeditor.page, without an account, it stays in your browser.

What online editors say they keep
As their own pages read on 12 October 2026:
- PDF24’s online tools run on its servers in the EU, and say files are deleted after one hour; its privacy policy says server logs, IP addresses included, are kept for up to 14 days (PDF24 privacy policy (opens another company’s page)).
- iLovePDF says it keeps files for at most two hours, and documents signed with its signing service for up to five years, for legal reasons (iLovePDF security (opens another company’s page)).
- Smallpdf’s tool pages say files are deleted after one hour (Smallpdf Redact PDF (opens another company’s page)).
Editors that don’t upload
- Preview on a Mac marks up PDFs on the Mac itself (Apple: Annotate a PDF in Preview (opens another company’s page)).
- PDF24 Creator, for Windows, says files stay on your PC (PDF24 Creator (opens another company’s page)).
- iLovePDF’s desktop app says it processes files locally (iLovePDF Desktop (opens another company’s page)).
- pdfeditor.page runs in your browser tab, on a phone, a tablet or a computer.
Good to know
- What can leave pdfeditor.page: a crash report without your words, Google Analytics if you say yes, a problem report you send, and an online voice only if you choose one. The privacy page lists them all.
- Downloads, not uploads. Text recognition and translation fetch their files once; your pages stay put.
- To check one yourself, follow edit a PDF without uploading it. Beyond the editor, there are 45 single-purpose tools at pdfeditor.page/tools.
