How to make a fillable PDF form

Open your PDF in Create a fillable form and choose Detect fields…: it proposes a field for each blank line, empty box and small square, named after its label. Add them, draw any it missed, and download.

Two panels. Fields found: a Volunteer sign-up form with dashed boxes over Full name, Email, Phone, Date of birth, the Mon, Wed, Sat and Sun check boxes, and the Signature and Date lines. Check, then add: a Detected fields panel saying Found 10 fields, some may have been missed, with rows for Full name, Email, Phone and Date of birth, each with reject and add buttons.
Ten fields found on a flat form, ready to add.

Make a form fillable in seven steps

  1. Open your PDF. Choose it in Create a fillable form.
  2. Choose Detect fields… Every page is read on your device, and each field it finds is dashed.
  3. Check each field. Select one to fit its box, or choose Reject.
  4. Add them. Choose the button that counts them, such as Add 10 fields.
  5. Pick a kind of field. Under New field, above the page (below it on a phone), choose one.
  6. Drag a box where the field goes.
  7. Download it. The fields stay fillable in the file.

Good to know

  • Check each page. Detection can miss fields, such as round radio buttons, and a signature or date line is added as a text field.
  • More than boxes. Tap a field to name it or make it required. A text field can take a date or a number format, or add up other fields.
  • On a phone, tap to place a field, or drag one with your finger.
