Questions

Is it free to read a PDF aloud?

Yes. It’s free and needs no account. It runs in your web browser, with nothing to install.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No, not without an account. Your PDF is opened and worked on in this browser tab, and never sent to our server. Read aloud uses a voice on your device. If your browser has none, it asks first, and only if you say yes does an online voice read. Its provider then gets the sentences it reads.

Is there a file size limit?

Not as a guest. Your file never reaches our server, so the only limit is what your device can handle. With a free account, each PDF kept in your library can be up to 100 MB.

Can I read a PDF aloud on my phone?

Yes. It works in the web browser on a phone, a tablet or a computer.

When you’d listen instead

  • A long report or a paper, while you walk or cook.
  • Your own writing read back to you, to catch what your eyes skip.
  • A page you find tiring to read, followed sentence by sentence as it’s spoken.

Follow along, and take control

The sentence being read is highlighted on the page, and the word too when the voice says which word it’s on. The page scrolls only as far as it must to keep it in view.

The player has previous and next paragraph, pause, speed and a choice of voice, and remembers what you pick. To start somewhere else, select the text first: reading begins there and stops where your selection ends.

On a phone

It reads in your phone’s web browser too. Where the browser allows it, the lock screen and headset buttons pause and resume the reading, so the phone can stay in your pocket.

Which voice reads

Read aloud uses a voice on your device. If your browser has none, it asks first, and only if you say yes does an online voice read. Its provider then gets the sentences it reads.

A scanned page is a picture of words, so there is nothing to read until text recognition has read it. Run OCR PDF on it first.
